April 2011 – Doug Patton & Jenny Solomon

MEET OUR CFV ATHLETE COUPLE OF THE MONTH:

(Had a hard time picking, plus they are joined at the hip)

Jenny and Doug have added a spark of energy and variety to our box since they joined.  Everyone loves their company and enjoys having them in the class during WODs.  They both work hard and push past their limits.  Doug works on being elite….(Still working on it Dougie) while Jenny just crosses her fingers everyday hoping not to run any distance programmed as prescribed.  Regardless of what the WOD is they both rarely miss a day and don’ t let up off the throttle once the clock starts.  They have both seen some great improvements in their fitness levels and continue to improve everyday.  Congrats you two on your continued dedication and discipline in hard work and sweat.

Doug Patton:

Why did you two choose CrossFit?

Back when I was a “young buck”, I worked out five days a week consistently.  I enjoyed the way I felt and was happy with my appearance, and I always had friends who went to the gym with me.  Back in 2003 I got arthritis and was discharged medically from the Navy in 2004.  Jenny and I moved to Dallas, and it was at this point that I stopped working out.  This was a new city, I had no friends to go to the gym with, and the motivation to stay in shape went by the wayside.  Additionally, my arthritis was really painful between 2003-2005, all of these factors kept me out of the gym.  I started flying in 2006, and the lifestyle was such that the food I ate was terrible, my sleep patterns were erratic, and I began to feel uncomfortable with myself.  It wasn’t until I got tired of living this way in September of 2010 that I started looking for a way to get my life back.  I left the airlines that September and started looking for a way to get back into shape.  I had read about Crossfit on many websites, but didn’t know where to start or which gym to go to.  On a Saturday afternoon, Jenny and I were driving down 2920 after watching planes at David Wayne Hooks, I happened to look at some signs on the left when I saw a Crossfit sign.  I turned around, wrote down the number, got home and called to find out about it.  Jose answered, we talked a little bit, and then he met us 20 minutes later at the gym to show us around.  Jose was awesome!  He made us feel comfortable, answered a million questions, and ultimately the decision to join was painless.

How has CrossFitting together at Victorious been?

Fun and painful!  Jenny and I have been going to the 5:30 pm class on a regular basis now since the last week of October 2010.  During that time, we have gradually gotten a lot stronger, better looking-I kid I kid , and Jenny is getting better at running!  I feel great, and I now have friends again!  We have made many friends, and have a blast working out with everyone.

What are you most proud of as a CFV Athletes?

The fact that we feel guilty when we don’t show up!  It is amazing how much we have progressed in strength and endurance in the few months since we started.  I am proud that I go to this gym!

What is your favorite thing about Cross Fit Victorious?

The atmosphere and the friends we workout with.  This place is unlike any other workout place I have been to or seen.  Jose and John are genially nice guys, they know their stuff, and they are respectable coaches.  They started us both out slow and when we were comfortable, they increased the workload.  Additionally, they respect your fears and help you work on getting better at whatever it is you want to achieve.  Everybody is somebody here!

What other fitness related activities do you both participate in outside of CF?

We hike, bike ride, and work out in the yard weekly.

Least favorite Bench Mark “Girl WOD or Movement? Why?

Anything that involves AMRAPS (As many reps as possible) in a certain amount of time.  I am more of a “this is what you gotta do for time” kinda guy!  I am not at the point where I  have enough internal drive, to try and crank anything out as fast as I can to see how many I can do!

Favorite bench mark “girl” WOD or movement? Why?

I kinda liked “Murph”, even though I did horrible on my time.  I am usually good at running, but this one really got me.  Sometimes, when the workout looks crazy, I tell myself “let’s do it and see what happens”!  This workout was long and took me 53 minutes!

Any other comments:

I am 31 now, and joining Crossfit Victorious is one of the best decisions I feel I ever made.  I struggled for 5 years trying to get back into working out, and being a part of this gym has brought back the joy of exercising and being in shape.  Every workout is different,  and every day is exciting!  I really appreciate the way Jose runs the gym, he makes it feel as if were my gym.  The atmosphere is inviting, everyone is friends, and everyone feels comfortable enough to be themselves.  I would recommend this place to anyone who wants to be motivated, who wants to have a good time while they workout, and who wants to be a part of a great community of people who are working hard together to stay in shape!

Jenny Solomon:

Why did you two choose CrossFit?

I changed jobs and lost my in-building gym so I was looking for a replacement. Doug was dying to try this new CrossFit thing that he’d been reading all about. We met with Jose, I laid out my list of things I was not going to do like go Paleo and work myself to the point of nausea, and then we started our trial week. Haven’t looked back since.

How has CrossFitting together at Victorious been?

It’s been really good. I made it a part of my routine so I go on auto pilot from my vanpool drop. I feel better when I go and the two of us going together helps push each of us on days we are feeling less like working out. Shout out to all my 5:30 peeps!

What are you most proud of as a CFV Athletes?

That I show-up even when it’s an entire workout of running….and I hate running.

What is your favorite thing about Cross Fit Victorious?

The variety of workouts and the people. Everyone is really cool and there are a lot of different personalities and athletic levels and goals that people have but everyone supports each other and it really does end up like a community. The workouts are great even when you don’t want to do them. And they push you out of your comfort zone and you surprise yourself with what you can do.

What other fitness related activities do you both participate in outside of CF?

Uhm…vacationing and partying. Does that count?

Anything that involves running…did I mention I hate running?

Favorite bench mark “girl” WOD or movement? Why?

Anything that’s short….at least then I know the suffering won’t last for long.

We need to have another CFV BBQ with Karaoke and a dance floor.
