FAQ

What can I expect on my first day?

We know CrossFit can be very intimidating so your first day will not be very intense or hard. We will  lead you through a warm-up of basic movements, teach you 1-3 new basic skills and then give you a workout in which the intensity (how hard the workout is) will be entirely up to you.

If we feel confident in your fitness ability we will allow you to go as hard as you want at the workout. If you have not worked out in a while or ever you will be encouraged to take your time and finish the workout. Then we will lead you through a cool down. All within 1 hour.

Do I need to be fit before starting CrossFit?

You will never be “Fit” enough. The workout you see posted on our site is for our most elite athlete. If you see it and think you can’t do a lot of it, no problem, you’re not alone. All workouts can be scaled to meet your fitness abilities until you are strong/fit enough to complete the workout as it is written (Rx’d). Fitness is a never ending pursuit. The most elite athlete can come into our gym and find a workout challenging. Whatever level you are at now, you go at the workout as hard to you can, getting stronger, faster and fitter each day.

The Fundamentals session is an introduction to CrossFit. It is required of all new members (within your first 2 weeks. So you may attend classes  for 2 weeks as a  member before you must schedule and complete your Fundamentals I and Fundamental II classes. Each session is about 45min to an hour long per session and costs $75.00 total. It includes a CFV WOD journal to help you track all of your times and weights lifter. It is a small group session scheduled every Tuesday/ Fundamentals I and Thursdays/ Fundamentals II  from 630p-730p. Both sessions must be completed before continueing with our CrossFit program.

Can I do CrossFit with an injury such as a neck or back?

Yes, we have had numerous clients who came to us with back, knee, or neck pain who have found relief by strengthening the muscles around the problem area.  People often neglect exercising their lower back or Mid line (Core) due to fear of re-injury and then end up weak, de-conditioned, and more susceptible to injury in the future. Every movement in CrossFit is scalable allowing anyone to take part in the workouts. For example if we have programmed deadlifts (picking up an object off the ground) you can scale it down using a PVC pipe or even just mimicking the movement as rehab.

Can I get a good workout in under 30 minutes?

Yes, more and more research shows that short, high intensity effort will produce better results than long and slow duration. If you run a 10k your intensity (power output) will be lower than if you run 400 meter sprints which will produce a high power output. Meaning you’re doing more work in less time. This is why we will push you to your physiological and psychological tolerances during any given workout. No matter who you are, results will only happen with your hard work and dedication. We do have workouts that go over 30 minutes on occasion (maintain variety)  but the majority of our workouts are shorter in duration.

I don’t want to get big and bulky from heavy weight lifting?

In order for people to get bigger, and especially women there are 2 things that have to be met:

1) Pick up VERY heavy weight on a frequent basis. This is not what we do. There will be days that 15 min of the workout are dedicated to a heavy Olympic lift, but that is not our main focus or workout. We do these lifts to promote and increase our athlete’s strength levels, not muscle mass.

2) Eat an extremely high amount of calories on a daily basis. It takes a large effort on a persons part to gain productive muscle mass, by eating the right foods in a very high amount.  This is also another thing we do not focus on.  The majority of our workouts provide your muscles with more contractile potential and not hypertrophy (muscle mass).

Why do you cost so much?

We actually cost a lot less than most fitness studios, personal trainers and other group led workout programs in our area. It will cost well over 50 dollars per hour for a personal trainer. At CrossFit Victorious you will always have a coach with you. They will be teaching and demonstrating the movements, giving nutrition advice, and pushing you to your limits. You are getting personal training in a group setting, plus joining a great community that makes workouts fun, exciting and encouraging.  Before you ask about price or complain about the cost we highly encourage you to come do it for a week so that you can see what you are paying for.  We have yet to have one person who tries it for a week ask about the reasons for the expense.

I have heard CrossFit is hard, is this true?

CrossFit is as hard as you make it. When you first start you are encouraged to take it slow, and learn the movements. We encourage you to push yourself as hard as you can which makes CrossFit hard. If you are asked to sprint a 400 meter for time you can do one of two things: sprint it as hard as you can, which will not be a comfortable feeling, or jog it. The person who goes as fast as they can will get better results and yes it will be hard. If training for overall fitness was easy we wouldn’t need to answer these questions.

Am I too old or too young to start CrossFit?

Because CrossFit uses natural, functional movements anybody can do it. Kids today play on jungle gyms, run, jump, and throw and that’s exactly what we do in CrossFit. You are never too old to start working out! Remember every workout is as hard as YOU make it.

How often do I need to come in?

At CrossFit Victorious we promote three days working, followed by 1 day of rest, or five days on two days off which is very demanding. You will notice that we program a workout every day (Mon-Sat) for the simple reason that most people have hectic lives and cannot follow a strict three days on, one day off. When you first start out your body will take time to adjust and yes you will get sore so we recommend coming every other day.
